AUGUST 2018 UPDATE

28th Aug 2018

UPDATE TO ALL MEMBERS – AUGUST 2018

Our Ref: 139/606

Dear Colleague,

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you had a restful summer and the batteries are fully recharged for the new school year ahead. We will, of course, keep you up-to-date with all relevant information during the course of the year but would just wish to draw your attention to a few issues at this point.

GENERAL SECRETARY

Due to illness, our General Secretary, Avril Hall-Callaghan, will not be with us at the beginning of this new term. We know that you will join with us in sending her best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

In the meantime, any issues which normally would be directed to Avril can be raised with our Deputy General Secretary, Ms Jacquie White. Our Field Officers, Lewis Love and Leigh Cooper, are always available to respond to any problems or queries you may have and our Organising Officer, Rebekka Gilpin, is available for school visits – just contact the office if you would like to schedule.

PAY

You will no doubt be aware that the teachers in England and Wales were offered a pay deal during the summer months. As pay is a devolved matter, this pay deal does not apply to the teachers in Northern Ireland, but our on-going pay negotiations are due to resume in the coming days. We will take heart from the relative success of our colleagues in England and Wales and trust that this places us in a stronger position moving forward. We will keep you informed of progress.

The Department of Education, however, did inform us in the summer that they intend to honour the incremental pay rises so any member due to move up the pay scale and will do so from September.

MAY WE REMIND ANY MEMBER ON M6 THAT THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO APPLY TO GO THROUGH THRESHOLD IF THEY WISH TO PROGRESS TO UPS1. You are only required to have completed one year at M6 to be eligible to apply. Forms can be obtained from your Principal or the DE website and should be submitted as a matter of priority.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION

In light of the on-going talks, we will be continuing with our industrial action into the new term; details can be found on the website. You can also contact the office if you need clarification on any aspect. Our Central Executive Committee will be meeting in September to review our position and we will keep you updated on any changes.

MEMBERSHIP PLUS CARDS

Your new Membership Plus cards will be with you in September and will allow you to access a growing number of great deals. Cards for permanent members of staff will be sent to your School Rep; temporary members of staff will have theirs sent to their home address. Let us know if you have any problems.

AND FINALLY…

We wish you every success for the year ahead. We know things are difficult out there and we also know that it is the dedication and commitment of Principals, teachers and support staff which is keeping the system afloat.

If we can help in any way, contact us on 028 90662216, office@utu.edu or on the website www.utu.edu.

Good luck!

Jacquie White

Deputy General Secretary
